“There were only two days when it was too hot to get out.”
Longstanding members will remember Audrey and Ken Luff who moved to the Bradford area a while back. Since then, Audrey has been keeping us up to date with her Letter From The North and the different gardening challenges she faces. In her latest letter, she reflects on the summer just gone.
There were only two days when it was too hot to go out. All the rest of the time you needed a cardigan. Comes of living on the top of the Pennines! The plus side is that we kept all our garden plants. Even the hydrangea flowered, and the grass stayed green. What really suffered was my garden on the terrace. All the plants are in pots, so the heat and the lack of rain took their toll and there is very little left. A neighbour kept two pots of lilies watered so they flowered. And the rose and quince have kept going, along with the tough old berberis.
I have got an electric scooter to get me around the drive and have got in all my daffs and tulips (one packet of tulips yet to go).
I have also found a gardener – a lovely lady who is really excited about our garden. She spotted some trees which need some attention and has revived the pond. She’s using all the bigger pieces of trimmings to make a dead hedge where the garden meets the field. And she reported that the viburnum Bodnatense is coming into flower.
Indoors I have geraniums and phaelenopsis orchids.
I hope that all is well with the Society!
